A Year of Dramatic Swings in Cargo Volumes at West Coast Ports

April 6, 2023

The Pacific Maritime Association – which represents the world’s leading shipping lines and terminal operators operating at West Coast ports – recently issued its 2022 annual report chronicling top trends, news stories, and statistical data covering all 29 ports from San Diego to Bellingham.

SCG is proud to write and produce the report each year, working in partnership with PMA staff throughout the Coast to develop the content. We also work with a group of amazing photographers who chronicle the movements of the world’s largest container vessels and other activities on the waterfront.

This year, the Pasha Hawaii MV George III graced the cover. The 774-foot vessel is the first LNG-powered containership to call the Bay Area. The report delves into a wide array of topics, including safety and training, longshore members’ wages and benefits, and highlights from the Coast’s various regions. One regional highlight was the visit by President Biden in June 2022 to the Port of Los Angeles.

This year’s report also includes discussion of the causes of market share declines at West Coast ports, with a particular focus on the San Pedro Bay Port Complex – the largest on the Coast.
