In a time of crisis, it’s inspiring to see so many individuals, businesses, non-profits and others step up to the plate to assist people facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles. With the profound impact of COVID-19 related school closures on student learning, SCG pro-bono client Winward Academy has risen to the occasion, providing its dynamic online learning tool free to high schools in underserved communities across the country. Dr. Jennifer Winward, Founder and CEO of Winward Academy, saw the need to help teachers rapidly transform in-classroom curriculums to an online format, and sprung into action with a solution.
So far, Winward Academy has made its full suite of online learning content available to more than 20,000 students who are using this online resource to augment class curriculum and test preparation. The students are streaming hundreds of hours of English and math curriculum videos for free to help them stay on track.
Dr. Winward was recently featured on CBS News 8 San Diego to discuss students’ transition to remote learning and preparation for upcoming standardized testing. She suggests for students to “maintain the same schedule” as they did prior to COVID-19, such as starting the morning with a nutritious breakfast and taking breaks between classes, to stay engaged in their remote studies.
