The Haynes Foundation, a force for change in the Los Angeles region for 100 years, is marking its centennial with the launch of a new podcast, Governance Matters.
As L.A. City and County explore major governance reforms simultaneously, Governance Matters offers an inside look at the civic and political conversations reshaping our communities.
Led by Haynes Foundation Executive Director Raphe Sonenshein, the podcast spotlights decisionmakers, scholars, journalists, and citizens making a difference in our democracy with the goal of creating a more responsive, more accountable, and more effective government that can better address our challenges and improve people’s lives.
Episodes 1 and 2 dig into L.A. County’s sweeping restructuring under Measure G. The latest episode features a conversation with Erwin Chemerinsky, Chair of the 1999 Charter Reform Commission and current UC Berkeley Law Dean, about the 1999 charter reform process and how lessons learned from that experience may inform today’s charter reform debate at City Hall. Then, reporter Liz Chou joins Raphe to explore what’s driving public demand for change, and what current proposals — from council expansion to police reform to an appointed city attorney — could mean for Angelenos.
